How does the credit report dispute process work?

Bureaus don’t create your data — lenders report it. So a dispute is really a verification loop: you flag the field, the bureau tags it “under dispute” and asks the reporting lender to confirm or correct it.

If the lender confirms the error, the bureau updates your report and your score recalculates.

The service is free by regulation — you never pay to correct your own data.

Which errors are worth disputing?

  • Accounts that aren’t yours — possible identity misuse; dispute immediately.
  • Wrong payment status — a DPD entry showing late for a payment you made on time.
  • Closed loans showing active — inflates your apparent debt burden.
  • Wrong balances or limits — distorts your utilization ratio.
  • Outdated personal details — name, PAN or address mismatches that trip KYC checks.
  • Stale “settled”/”written-off” flags — statuses you have already cleared with the lender.

Will disputing an error hurt my score?

No. Raising a dispute is not a credit event — no enquiry, no penalty.

While a field is tagged “under dispute”, some lenders may wait for resolution before deciding an application, which is one more reason to dispute before applying, not during.

If the correction goes through, your score can only benefit.

What if the lender says the data is correct?

The bureau keeps what the lender confirms — bureaus cannot override the data source.

Your escalation path: complain to the lender’s grievance cell with proof, and if unresolved within 30 days, take it to the RBI’s complaint system (cms.rbi.org.in), which covers credit information disputes.

Do I have to dispute with all four bureaus?

Only with the bureau showing the error. But since lenders report to CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF, check all four files — the same mistake may live in several of them and each needs its own dispute.

⚠️ Beware of “guaranteed approval” and “CIBIL cleaning” promises. Disputing errors is free and you can do it yourself — anyone charging upfront fees to “clean your CIBIL”, or asking for OTPs and Aadhaar copies to “file disputes for you”, is running the classic scam. Genuine negative history cannot be deleted by anyone. That is how scams work in India.

How to fix errors in your credit report?

File the dispute properly — follow this order:

  1. Open the official CIBIL Consumer Dispute Resolution page and log into your myCIBIL account.
  2. Locate the exact account and field that is wrong, and note what the correct value should be.
  3. Submit the online dispute form — you can dispute multiple fields in one go.
  4. Track the status in your account; the field gets tagged “under dispute” while it’s checked.
  5. If 30 days pass without resolution, escalate to the lender’s grievance cell and then the RBI portal.

Keep documents ready: statements, NOCs and payment proofs speed up lender verification.

Once corrected, re-download your report and confirm the score moved.

Dispute support channels

Use the official channels:

  • TransUnion CIBIL: +91-22-6140-4300 (Mon–Sat, 10 AM to 6 PM) and the online dispute form
  • Equifax India: toll-free 1800-209-3247
  • CRIF High Mark: crifhighmark.com/raise-a-dispute
  • Experian India: experian.in/contact-us
  • Escalation: RBI complaint portal at cms.rbi.org.in

Is disputing errors worth the paperwork?

Completely — a single corrected DPD entry or removed foreign account can restore dozens of points and unblock approvals you were losing for free.

The honest downside: when the lender disagrees, the escalation route takes patience and documentation.

Frequently asked questions about fixing credit report errors

Is the CIBIL dispute process free?

How long does a CIBIL dispute take?

RBI rules require resolution within 30 days, with ₹100 per day of compensation if it goes beyond that.

Can CIBIL change my data directly?

Each bureau needs its own dispute — file separately with CIBIL, Experian, Equifax or CRIF wherever the error shows.

What can I do if the lender refuses to correct real errors?

Escalate to the lender’s grievance cell with proof, and after 30 days unresolved, complain via the RBI portal at cms.rbi.org.in.
