No — the RuPay card that comes with a Jan Dhan or regular savings account is a debit card that spends your own balance. RuPay is only the payment network, run by NPCI; it powers both debit and credit cards, and only a credit card lets you spend borrowed money.

How does a RuPay card actually work?

RuPay is India’s own card payment network, operated by NPCI — the same role Visa and Mastercard play for other cards. The network moves the money; it is the bank that decides if your card is debit or credit.

A RuPay debit card is linked directly to your savings account: every swipe or online payment pulls money you already have, instantly.

A RuPay credit card is a separate approved limit of borrowed money, billed once a month — and the bank only issues it after analyzing your income and CIBIL history.

What does your RuPay debit card actually give you?

  • Payments at ATMs, shops and online stores across India, straight from your balance.
  • For PMJDY holders, a free card with accident insurance cover of up to ₹2 lakh (accounts opened after 28 August 2018).
  • Zero debt risk — you can never spend money you don’t have.
  • No interest, no monthly bill and usually no annual fee on basic variants.
  • A spending record inside your bank — useful when you later ask that bank for credit.

Do not confuse debit access with borrowed money — know what card you actually have before planning any purchase.

How do you check if your card is debit or credit?

Look at the card face: Indian cards print DEBIT or CREDIT on the front or back, next to the RuPay logo.

Still unsure? Open your bank’s app or net banking — debit cards appear under your savings account, while credit cards have their own limit, bill and due date.

If you never signed a separate credit card application, what you hold is almost certainly a debit card.

Does using a RuPay debit card build your CIBIL score?

No. Debit card swipes, UPI payments and savings account activity are not reported to credit bureaus.

CIBIL scores (300–900) are built only by credit products: credit cards, loans and EMIs repaid on time.

That is why heavy debit card users can still have no CIBIL history at all.

Can you get a real RuPay credit card?

Yes. Many Indian banks issue RuPay credit cards, and they have one unique advantage: they can be linked to UPI, so you pay merchant QR codes with your credit limit using a separate UPI PIN.

Approval, however, follows the normal credit rules — income proof, PAN, and a CIBIL check. If your income is low or informal, an FD-backed secured card is the realistic first step.

⚠️ Beware of “guaranteed approval” promises. No legitimate bank guarantees a credit card before analysis, and nobody legitimate charges an upfront fee or asks for your OTP, UPI PIN or card details to “upgrade” your RuPay debit card to credit. That is how scams work in India.

How to move from a RuPay debit card to a credit card?

Stop losing time with random applications — follow this order:

  1. Confirm which card you hold and how the network works on the official NPCI RuPay page or in your bank’s app.
  2. Keep your PAN and Aadhaar linked and correct — PAN is mandatory for any credit card application.
  3. Check your CIBIL report before applying; you are entitled to one free report per bureau every year.
  4. If you have low or informal income, ask your bank about an FD-backed RuPay credit card first.
  5. Apply to one issuer and wait for the decision before trying another.

The bank will analyze your profile and respond within a few days to a few weeks.

If approved, set up bill reminders and keep usage below 30% of the limit from day one.

RuPay card helpline and support

For questions about your card, use the official channels:

  • Your bank’s customer care: number printed on the back of the card and on the bank’s site.
  • DigiSaathi (digital payments helpline, 24×7): 14431 or 1800-891-3333.
  • PMJDY national toll-free (Jan Dhan cards): 1800-11-0001.
  • Lost card: block it immediately through the bank app or customer care.

So, is a RuPay debit card enough for you?

For daily spending, yes — it is safe, free and accepted everywhere in India.

The honest downside: a RuPay debit card will never improve your credit score, no matter how much you use it.
